Inspired in Oaxaca, Mexico

Writer: CollierConceptsCollierConcepts

We were absolutely inspired in Oaxaca, Mexico! We selected this destination to research its rich culture, history, and architecture. While there, we found ourselves delighted with the magnificence, wonder and awe of Oaxacas’ 16th century historical charm.

In fact, we never wanted to leave...

The scale and structure of the buildings, with their gorgeous arches, portals and oversized doors, barrel vaults, massive stone walls and elaborate gates, were beyond memorable.

The Church of Santo Domingo beckoned us to enter: “El tour es solo en Espanol.” Cue Google Translate telling us “the tour is only in Spanish”. We entered the majestic doors that revealed botanical gardens, golden church walls, and the historical lore of a museum, all inside. Speaking for the plants, the cultural significance of these ancient gardens aims to preserve the indigenous, traditional botanicals typical of this Southern Mexican fertile valley, which survive and thrive within The Church of Santo Domingo.

For your Oaxaca bucket list, in addition to The Church of Santo Domingo, plan on dining and visiting the bakery and beverage cafe at Tierra Del Sol, the creation of Olga Cabrera, a chef and founder who believes that “we all deserve to eat well.”

We continued to experience all the moles, guacamole with crickets and mezcal at every turn, along with Michelin Star restaurants – Oaxaca is a gastronomic destination not to be missed. Many of the meals were complemented with education, intriguing and beautifully presented overviews of the botanicals used, including a deeper understanding of the difference in moles and the significance of corn, squash, and beans within the Mexican culture and lifestyle.

The colonial centre of Oaxaca and the Monte Alban archaeological site were collectively designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. You can learn more about that here.

We are both so grateful to have experienced Oaxaca and we will be sharing more with you soon!
